4. The Hyatt Regency Kansas City
On a balmy Friday evening in 1981, 114 people were killed in the most tragic hotel disaster in history. Two of the Hyatt’s unique skywalks suddenly collapsed while 1,500 party-goers were dancing under them in the hotel’s atrium.
The walkways, which spanned the second and fourth floors of the atrium and looked like they floated in the air, were a major feature of the Hyatt Regency. The infamous tragedy occurred a year after the hotel opened and can be traced back to a design flaw.
